• De Lutine


Het Lied van de Lutine

On October 9th, 1799 a British ship, the HMS Lutine attempted to take a large amount of gold (estimated to be worth some 100 million pounds in 2015 currency) from Yarmouth to Cuxhaven in Germany. This was part of the war effort of the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France of which the Batavian Republic was an ally. When sailing past Vlieland and Terschelling a strong northwesterly gale drove the ship into the sound and onto a sandbank where it perished. All but one of the 240 passengers perished and the gold was lost. Many people have tried to recuperate it since and found a few pieces here and there but most of it is still somewhere deep in in sand.

sneewwit zo waren de zeilen
Twee ankertjes tot behoud van de lading zuiver goud
En de kapitein van dat schip
stond hoog op de kampanje
Want hem was toevertrouwd de lading zuiver goud
En de konstapel van dat schip
liet zijn courage blijken
Zijn stukken zwaar en gram schoten rook en vuur en vlam
En de stuurman van dat schip
deed anders niet dan peilen
omdat hij was bevâan dat zijn scheepje zou vergaan
Maar daar kwam uit de noordwest
een zware storm opzetten
en wierp bij Schellingerland het schone schip op 't strand
En daar ligt nu het schone schip
geslingerd door de baren
met goud en man en muis is het schone schip vergaan.
