  • 1873 - Nella Giacomelli born.
  • 1909 - Emma Goldman tests her free-speech rights by delivering a lecture before the Harlem Liberal Alliance; standoff with police, but no interference with the lecture.
  • 1910 - Jean-Jacques Liabeuf executed. French shoe-maker guilliotined despite massive protests initiated by the anarchists. Gustave Hervé, the revolutionary socialist & publisher of The Social War, got four years in prison for merely writing articles defending Liabeuf.
  • 1926 - French Police announce they have thwarted a plot to assassinate the king of Spain Alphonse XIII (officially visiting France), with the arrests of the Spanish anarchists Francisco Ascaso, Buenaventura Durruti & Gregorio Jover (on June 25). Also today numéro 65 of the anarchiste paper Libertaire is seized in Paris.

  • 1865 - Auguste Garnery (d. 1935) born, Haute Saône.
  • 1920 - 2nd Congress of "Unione Communista Anarchica d' Italia," begun on the 1st, concludes. Under the influence of Errico Malatesta it drops the reference to Communism (so badly distorted by the Bolsheviks) & takes the name "Unione Anarchica Italiana" (UAI).
  • 1990 - Federation of Anarchist Youth (F.A.M.) participate in "City of the Truth" against the Bulgarian communist president Petar Mladenov (July 3-Aug. 5).

  • 1862 - During this summer Mikhail Bakunin writes the brochures The People's Cause and To Russian, Polish, & All Slav Friends.
  • 1881 - Premier issue of the monthly Le Communiste-Libertaire, Corning, Iowa.
  • 1894 - During this month "antianarchiche" (antianarchy) laws are passed in Italy, intended to destroy all the movements of protest against the state.
  • 1921 - Bartolomeo Vanzetti takes the stand. He is questioned at length about his political views during cross-examination.
  • 1940 - Carl Einstein (b. 1885) dies, a suicide to prevent capture by the Nazis, Lestelle-Bétharram (Basses-Pyrenées), France (or July 3?).
  • 1952 - Early in July, John Cage performs a series of his sonatas & interludes in a large tent.

  • 1894 - Fortunato Serantoni publishes the first number of La Questione social (title borrowed from Errico Malatesta's paper), in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
  • 1898 - Ernest Ernestan (aka Ernest Tanrez) born, Ghent, Belgium.
  • 1912 - First issue of ¡Luz! published by Grupo Luz, in México.
  • 1914 - Mid-July, Emma Goldman travels to Eureka, California & Arcata, California, lumber towns in Humboldt County, California; delivers first-known anarchist lectures there.
  • 1918 - Intelligence agencies begin to circulate the names & addresses of over 8,000 Mother Earth magazine subscribers, targeting them for investigation. Emma Goldman also reluctantly concurs with Stella Ballantine's decision to close the Mother Earth Bookshop.
  • 1920 - Eight-member expedition for the Petrograd Museum of the Revolution, including Henry Alsberg, Alexander Berkman, and Emma Goldman, travels through the Ukraine (July 15-August 6). The events are recounted by Berkman in The Bolshevik Myth. (pictured)
  • 1927 - Julien Content (b. 1892) dies. Crippled in a car accident in 1926, today he commits suicide.
  • 1994 - Anarcho-punks from the north & north-east hold a conference at the University of Ceara, 15 - 17th July. The meeting brings together individuals & groups from five separate states to discuss various themes.
  • 1998 - Vicente Ruiz (b. 1913) dies in Melbourne, Australia after a long illness.

  • 1862 - Emile Maurin (1862-1913) (aka Elie Murmain) lives. French anarchiste militant & photographer.
  • 1869 -: Emile Masson lives (1869-1923), in Brest, France. Breton militant, professor, writer & libertarian socialist propagandist.
  • 1892 - "In the far right-hand corner of the second room, near a dusty, cobwebbed window, sat a woman. Alone in that gathering of hard-faced, half clad men, enveloped in a dense atmosphere of choking smoke, she reclined placidly in a barroom chair, reading..." — excerpt, interview with Emma Goldman, "New York World," July 28, 1892
  • 1894 - The last of the lois scélérates was passed, condemning any individual or publication using anarchist propaganda.
  • 1907 - France: In Raon-l'Etape the forces of "order" open fire on peaceful strikers, killing two workers. Barricades now appear high in the streets & the black flag is raised.
  • 1920 - Argentina & Uruguay: Congress of the Operários Chapeleiros Sul-Americano (South American hat-makers), held this month. Anarcho-syndicalist participation is evident.
  • 1920 - Pasquale Binazzi is arrested in Spezio, Italy, charged with forming an armed gang during social disturbances in the city last month. Binazzi, as a trade union militant & director of the anarchist magazine "Il Libertario", is often the target of exercised authorities. In response to his arrest workers initiate a General Strike.
  • 1958 - Saxe Commins (1892-1958) dies, New York. An anarchist activist, a speaker, & Emma Goldman's nephew (Stella Ballantine's brother); his activities in his early years included collaborating on & editing Emma Goldman's newspaper, Mother Earth. Became a longtime was senior editor at Random House publishers.
  • 2002 - A No Borders camp organized by Autonomes in Strasbourg to protest against anti-immigration policies closes.
  • 2006 - Illustrator Richard Mock dies, Brooklyn, New York. Best known for his linocut illustrations on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times from 1980 through 1996. Mock's art frequently appeared on the covers of the magazines Fifth Estate, Alternative Press Review & Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed. His work has been cited as an influence by a number of contemporary American printmakers.
