Format

On February 1, online registration for teams was opened, which lasted until March 31, 2021. The second edition of the online championship teams in Carcassonne could participate in those countries or regions in which the game was published in the official language and represents one team. The players of these teams were required to have or create a profile on the online platform "www.boardgamearena.com" where the competition took place. It was also spelled out a clarification that the team had to register from 6 to 10 players.[2][3] The possibility of registering composite teams was also introduced, which could be formed from players from two countries / regions that do not have enough players to form a team on their own, and providing a minimum of 2 players from each country / region. In order for the registration to take place, at a minimum, both parties must have a clear historical or geographical proximity.[4] Thus, a composite team was put up by Latvia and Lithuania.[5]

The championship was held in two stages: group matches and the knockout phase. 29 teams for each of the matches had to put up 5 players, who in turn had to play one duel of two games or three games if the first two games led to a draw. The top twelve teams qualified for the playoffs: the winners of their groups qualified directly for the quarter-finals, the second and third places qualified for Round of 16.

Teams

The participating teams from last year's championship were joined by ten debuting teams from Argentina, Belarus, Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong and Latvia&Lithuania. However, at the same time, the Norwegian team withdrew from participation.
