History
In March 2011, the bidding for construction contracts was to be concluded.[3]
As of April 2014, all projects related with the Tulum Airport were no longer available through official sites, and after the installation of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as president in 2018, emphasis was placed on the high speed trans-peninsula train, the Tren Maya.[4]
In recent years, however, plans were reinstituted and the airport was scheduled to open in April 2024, with Viva Aerobus announced as the first carrier to operate from there.[5] But the airport will receive its first flight earlier than that, on December of 2023.
In August 2023, Aeroméxico announced its intentions to launch flights to the United States and Canada, with its first destinations being Toronto, Chicago and San Francisco. As of October 2023, tickets have not yet been made available. [6]
In October 2023, Delta Air Lines announced that it would launch direct flights from Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport to the airport when international flights open in March 2024.[7]
