Reception

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 79% based on 39 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Black & White's clunky format fumbles the fundamentals of storytelling, but this hybrid series nonetheless scores a touchdown in conveying Colin Kaepernick's truth, even if the reality is absent."[6] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 70 out of 100 based on 17 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[7]

Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave the series a B and described the series as "an uneven but ultimately edifying portrayal of the young athlete's coming of age as a biracial boy growing up in a predominantly white world."[8]

Accolades

It was nominated for a Peabody Award in 2022.[9][10]
