Louisiana was won by Adlai Stevenson (D–Illinois), running with Senator John Sparkman, with 52.92% of the popular vote, against Dwight D. Eisenhower (R–New York), running with Senator Richard Nixon, with 47.08% of the popular vote.[4][5] Eisenhowerʼs performance was nonetheless the best by a Republican in the state since Reconstruction. This was the first time a Republican presidential candidate ever carried Bienville, Claiborne and Saint Landry parishes, the first time since 1876 that Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto, Tensas and West Feliciana parishes voted Republican, the first since 1884 that the GOP carried Madison and Saint Bernard parishes, and the first since 1892 when the Republicans won Lincoln and Plaquemines parishes.[6]
As of the 2020 presidential election, this is the last election in which Ouachita Parish, Union Parish, and LaSalle Parish voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.[7] This is the most recent election in which the Democratic nominee would carry the state without winning the presidency.
