Following the success of Afterlife, Sony announced the sequel in April 2022, with Reitman returning as director. Kenan would later take over as director from Reitman that December, while the rest of the cast reprised their roles. New cast members including Nanjiani, Oswalt, Acaster and Lind were announced in March 2023, with filming commencing that month and wrapping it in June. It is the first film in the Ghostbusters franchise made without the involvement of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films and produced subsequent films until his death in February 2022.[1]

The film is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on March 29, 2024.[2][3]

Cast

Additionally, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Development

Following the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in November 2021, Dan Aykroyd has expressed interest in having the surviving cast of the original Ghostbusters team reprise their roles in up to three sequels.[10]

In April 2022, it was announced that a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) was in early development at Sony Pictures.[11][12]

In June 2022, the film was confirmed by director Jason Reitman under the working title Firehouse.[13] That same month it was announced that the sequel would take place in New York City.[14] On June 28, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the film will be released on December 20, 2023.[15] On October 5, 2022, Mckenna Grace announced that she would reprise her role.[16] The following month, Ernie Hudson revealed he read a script for the film.[17]

In December 2022, it was announced that Gil Kenan would take over as director from Reitman, who still remains as a writer and producer. It was also announced that Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon would return.[18] In March 2023, it was announced that Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind had been cast in the film.[19]

While no official confirmation has been made on other returning cast members from the original films, in an April 25, 2023 interview with The Film Collective, Ernie Hudson seemingly confirmed that Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Annie Potts would be appearing in the film saying "It's great to be back with Danny and Bill and Annie Potts and the new cast. It's been forty years, it just feels like family."[20]

Aykroyd confirmed he was in the midst of filming the sequel during an appearance on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen on 3 June 2023.

Filming

Principal photography began on March 20, 2023, in London,[21] under the working title Firehouse, with Eric Steelberg serving as the cinematographer.[7][22]

Filming was spotted in New York City where Casey Neistat caught a stunt scene in a video posted on June 7, 2023 while documenting the effects of the 2023 Canadian wildfires on New York City. Filming wrapped on June 23.[23]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on March 29, 2024, taking over the original release date of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.[3] It was previously scheduled to be released on December 20, 2023,[2] but was delayed to its March date due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[3]

In April 2021, Sony signed deals with Netflix and Disney for the rights to their 2022 to 2026 film slate, following the films' theatrical and home media windows. Netflix signed for exclusive "pay 1 window" streaming rights, which is typically an 18-month window and included Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its past films. Disney signed for "pay 2 window" rights for the films, which would be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu as well as broadcast on Disney's linear television networks.[24]
