Wyoming was won by incumbent Democratic President Harry S. Truman, running with Senate Majority Leader Alben W. Barkley, with 51.62 percent of the popular vote, to the 47.27 percent won by Republican Governor of New York Thomas E. Dewey and his running mate Earl Warren, the then-Governor of California and future Chief Justice of the United States. This victory marked a Democratic flip, as Dewey had previously won the state four years earlier.[1]
Truman's victory in Wyoming was part of a major upset victory nationwide; prior to the election, polls had widely forecasted a Dewey victory. Dewey ran a low risk campaign, largely avoiding criticizing Truman, while the Democrat suffered from low approval ratings. However, on election day the state's three electoral votes, and its Class II Senate seat would flip into Democratic hands.
As of 2020, this remains the last presidential election in which Wyoming voted more Democratic than the nation. Wyoming would only support a Democratic presidential nominee once more, in 1964, when it backed Lyndon B. Johnson amidst a national landslide. Since then, Wyoming has become a heavily Republican state, with Republicans carrying the state by double digits in every subsequent election except 1992, and no Democrat since winning even 40% of the state's vote.
