Undeb Cenedlaethol Athrawon Cymru (meaning 'National Union of Teachers of Wales'; commonly referred to as UCAC), is a trade union for teachers in Wales. It recognises the importance of the Welsh language for education in Wales.

A short history

UCAC was formed in Cardiff in December 1940 when several individuals left some of the large British teaching unions over matters pertaining to the Welsh language. UCAC's founder members felt the need for a teaching union which had aims, policies and services which corresponded specifically to the needs of teachers living and working in Wales.

UCAC is the only trade union which was formed in Wales. Since its formation it has played a crucial role in several spheres, including the history of education in Wales, trade unionism in Wales and the social and linguistic history of Wales since 1940.

UCAC has its headquarters in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion and has a membership of about 4,000 teachers and lecturers. It is affiliated to the UK Trades Union Congress (since 1994), since under current TUC rules it is not permissible to affiliate only to TUC Cymru.

The first National Secretary of the union was Gwyn M. Daniel, Cardiff who campaigned relentlessly for Welsh-medium education in the capital as well as nationally.

One of the former national organisers was the dramatist Gareth Miles.

Aims of the union

  • To protect and improve members' working conditions
  • To provide professional advice and legal support of the highest standard
  • To promote members' interests
  • To ensure an independent education system in Wales
  • To promote the Welsh language and culture

The current General Secretary is Ioan Rhys Jones, the National President for 2023-24 is Geraint Phillips and the National Vice-President for the same period is Ceri Dafydd Evans.
