The Ore Mountains (German: Erzgebirge, Czech: Krušné hory) form the natural boundary between Saxony and Bohemia. Today, the state border between Germany and the Czech Republic runs just north of the main crest of this mountain range. The highest mountains are the Klínovec (German: Keilberg), 1,244 m above sea level, and the Fichtelberg (1,215 m). From the Middle Ages onwards the culture of the Ore Mountains has been heavily influenced by mining. The old saying in this area "Alles kommt vom Bergwerk her!" ("Everything comes from the mine") means just that: everything, from the landscape to the crafts, the industry to the folk art and living traditions; to most aspects of life in the region. more…
