History

North Beach, part of modern-day New Brighton, was a leisure destination for surfing and picnics. On 6 May 1849, the schooner Swift en route from Brisbane to Sydney, was drifted ashore to a beach at nearby New Brighton by a vicious cyclone.

In addition to the nearby towns of North Ocean Shores and South Golden Beach, over 95 percent of New Brighton has become free of gas extraction.

Currently, New Brighton is a quiet small community with a combinational mix of natural environment in close proximity to Marshalls Creek Nature Reserve and its 10-km stretch of sand-dune beach.
