Nanum, Queensland

Nanum is a coastal residential locality in Weipa Town, Far North Queensland, Australia.[2] In the 2016 census Nanum had a population of 921 people.[1]

Nanum is situated between Trunding and Evans Landing, near the mouth of the Mission River. Approximately half of the land is used for residential housing while the remainder is undeveloped.[3]

Albatross Bay is off the coast to the north-west (8.5616°S 95.5783°E / -8.5616; 95.5783 (Albatross Bay)), part of the Gulf of Carpentaria.[4] Nanum Beach is a sandy strip (12.6345°S 141.8632°E / -12.6345; 141.8632 (Nanum Beach)) that extends along most of the Nanum coastline and north into neighbouring Trunding.[5]

History

Nanum was established in the 1990s as the residential area of Weipa needed to grow southward.[6]

In the 2006 census, Nanum had a population of 728 people.[7]

In the 2011 census, Nanum had a population of 815 people.[8]

In the 2016 census Nanum had a population of 921 people.[1]

Education

There are no schools in Nannum. The nearest primary and secondary school is Western Cape College in Rocky Point to the north-west.[3]
