NIT championships and semifinal appearances
This is a list of NIT champions and semifinal appearances by school. Schools whose names are italicized are no longer in Division I, and can no longer be included in the tournament.
Total NIT championships
- Total does not include vacated title.
- All of LIU's NIT titles were won by the school's Brooklyn campus, branded athletically as "Long Island" through 2012–13 and later as "LIU Brooklyn". After the 2018–19 season, Long Island University merged the Brooklyn athletic program and the NCAA Division II program of its Post campus, creating a new D-I program that now competes as the LIU Sharks. The merged program inherited the Division I membership, history, and records of the Brooklyn program.

- As noted in the previous section, the current LIU athletic program inherited the history and records of LIU's Brooklyn campus after the university merged the athletic programs of its Brooklyn and Post campuses in 2019.
