On March 18, 2021, Dan Kunka's spec script Lift was acquired by Netflix, with Simon Kinberg's Genre Pictures and Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho set to produce.[2] In September, F. Gary Gray was set to direct and Kevin Hart was attached to star and produce.[3] On June 9, 2022, the full cast was revealed.[4]

The film is set to debut on Netflix on January 12, 2024.[5] It was originally scheduled to be released on August 25, 2023,[6] however, it was postponed to its current date, due to the impact of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike in the United States on the film's promotion.[5]
