LaVonne Griffin-Valade

LaVonne Griffin-Valade (born 1952/1953)[1] is an American politician and writer who is the current Oregon Secretary of State, after being appointed by governor Tina Kotek in 2023.

Early life and education

Griffin-Valade was born in John Day, Oregon. She graduated with a master's degree in public administration from Portland State University.[2]

Career

In 1998, Griffin-Valade was hired by the Multnomah County auditor.[2] She was elected the auditor of Multnomah County in 2006,[3] taking office in January 2007.[4] She resigned her position with Multnomah County to run to become the Portland City Auditor in a 2009 special election; she ran unopposed.[3] She served until 2014, after which she became a crime novelist.[2]

On June 28, 2023, following the resignation of Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan, governor Tina Kotek appointed Griffin-Valade to serve for the remainder of Fagan's four-year term.[2] She was sworn in on June 30.[5][6] She has stated that she does not plan to run for a full term in 2024.[6]
