Alcantara began acting at age seven and made her television debut in Star Circle Quest: Search for the Next Kiddie Superstars (2010-2011).[1] She usually played young version of lead actresses, particularly as the young Maja Salvador in two shows: Lumayo Ka Man Sa Akin (2012) and Ina Kapatid Anak (2012). Referred to as "La Nueva Contravida",[2][3] She rose to fame after playing Arlene in Kambal, Karibal which helped her earn her first acting awards including: Best Supporting Drama Actress at the 32nd PMPC Star Awards for Television,[4] Most Promising Female Star for TV at the 2018 Alta Media Icon Awards[5] and the national winner of the Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 1st Asian Academy Creative Awards.[6] Dubbed as "La Nueva Diva",[7][8] Alcantara made her first solo concert titled 'Kyline Alcantara Take Flight' at SM Skydome[9] and released her debut album under GMA Records entitled 'Kyline' which debuted at No. 2 on iTunes Philippines.[10]

Early life

Kyline Nicole Aquino Alcantara Manga[lower-alpha 1] was born on September 3, 2002,[13] in Ocampo, Camarines Sur, Philippines, to Rowena Alcantara and Salvador "Butch" Manga.[14][15] She has brothers named Kent Adler and Robin Angelou, and her parents got separated when Alcantara was four before her parents reconciled 10 years later. Alcantara attended Saint Francis of Assisi College for her primary education and later attended Academy of Christian Excellence Montessori for two years of high school before moving into Exodus Elementary School.[14]

Drawn to the Armed Forces of the Philippines' strength, Alcantara said she wanted to enlist in the military, a job they did not offer.[16] At age seven, she gained attention from show business instead after participating in theatrical plays. Before auditioning as a cast member in Goin' Bulilit (2005–2019), Alcantara's family traveled to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Diliman, Quezon City, where they arrived too late and noticed auditions had ended.[14]

Career

2010–2020: Early roles and breakthrough

Alcantara made her television debut in the 2010 talent show Star Circle Quest: Search for the Next Kiddie Superstars, in which she qualified to the top ten before being the first contestant to be eliminated from the show. Despite losing,[14] she was recruited at Star Magic in 2011.[17] In 2013, Alcantara costarred opposite Andrea Brillantes in the remake of GMA Network's Anna Liza (1980–1985), titled Annaliza. At her audition for the show, she immediately secured the villainous role. In a 2020 retrospective, Alcantara said her craftsmanship influenced the show, having acting lessons from costars Zanjoe Marudo, Kaye Abad, Denise Laurel, and director Theodore Boborol. Her next supporting roles were Jessa Boborol in Pangako Sa 'Yo (2015–2016) and Chloe in Born for You (2016). Alcantara made her cinema debut with minor roles in 2015 films Hamog and Etiquette for Mistresses. Her Star Magic contract expired in 2017.[14]

Alcantara in 2018

In March 2018, Alcantara signed a network deal with Sparkle GMA Artist Center;[18] she appeared as Cheska De Villa, a villain, in the television series Kambal, Karibal (2017–2018).[19][20] She initially auditioned for either of her minor or supporting roles in the series,[16][21] especially that of a younger version of Teresa (Jean Garcia).[19] When GMA Network executives discovered that Alcantara's acting was decent, they convinced her to return for her different role.[21] Her costars in the series, including Bianca Umali, Miguel Tanfelix, Pauline Mendoza, and Jeric Gonzales, presented her with new acting experiences.[19] Alcantara's performance, which won her a PMPC Star Award for Television[22][23] and received her an Asian Academy Creative Award nomination,[24][25] was lauded by viewers[19] and proved to be her breakthrough role.[26][27][28]

Alcantara cohosted two variety shows in 2018: Sunday PinaSaya and Studio 7,[14] and released her debut album Kyline that September.[29] In 2019, she portrayed Anna Sevilla / Elsa Dela Cruz,[30] the daughter of Edward Sevilla (Marvin Agustin) and Belinda Lopez (Sunshine Dizon) who was previously suffered from amnesia,[31][32] in the musical series Inagaw na Bituin. In preparation, Alcantara read scripts that were inherent and watched videos about acting.[30] Her next film role was in Julius Alfonso's Black Lipstick (2019) alongside Migo Adecer, Manolo Pedrosa, and Kate Valdez.[33] Rappler critic Oggs Cruz criticized the film's complicated, unfocused scope, describing it as "old-fashioned".[34] Alcantara made a part in the variety show All-Out Sundays since 2020.[35] Bilangin ang Bituin sa Langit was her next project that year.[14]

2021–present: Mature roles

Alcantara appeared in three television series in 2021. She had a guest role in an episode of the anthology series Magpakailanman as a Overseas Filipino Worker who was imprisoned for rape. Transitioning to mature roles was new to Alcantara, given "how strong of a woman she is".[36] She received a PMPC Star Award for Best Single Performance by an Actress nomination.[37][38] Alcantara starred in the installment #Future of the anthology I Can See You, in which she played a depressive and enigmatic woman.[39] I Left My Heart in Sorsogon, a romantic drama, was her final series that year.[40]

Public image and personal life

Francesca Testa of Mega took note of her energetic and "amusing personality".[41] Krista Garcia of Preview.ph commented on her "determined optimism", identifying an extent of "typical carefree hopefulness" to her status and adding, "She's certain that her destiny is to be a big star, not because it has been handed to her, but because she knows that she will do whatever it takes to earn it."[42]

Alcantara had difficulties with acne, missing roles, her family life, finances, and rejection from auditions.[11][14] She is an ambassador for companies Converse[43] and Ever Bilena,[44] and agencies SOS Children's Villages[45][46] and the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO). Alcantara's purpose of the KTO is to maintain South Korea a "top-of-mind tourist destination for Filipinos".[47] She began a relationship with actor Mavy Legaspi in 2021.[48]
