Jorge Maciel (football manager)

Jorge Miguel Gonçalves Maciel (born 30 October 1985) is a Portuguese football manager who manages French club Valenciennes.

In this Portuguese name, the first or maternal family name is Gonçalves and the second or paternal family name is Maciel.

Career

Born in Barcelos,[1] Maciel was an assistant manager for Lito Vidigal and Jorge Simão at Primeira Liga club C.F. Os Belenenses in 2014–15,[2] From 2017 to 2019, he assisted compatriot Miguel Cardoso at Rio Ave FC, FC Nantes and RC Celta de Vigo.[3]

Maciel returned to his homeland in July 2019 to be manager of S.L. Benfica's under-23 team, but returned to assistantship in November, at Lille OSC, to help Christophe Galtier, Jocelyn Gourvennec, and Paulo Fonseca.[4] On 5 July 2023, he left for Valenciennes FC in Ligue 2 also in France, signing a two-year contract for his first work as a senior head coach at the age of 37.[1] On his debut on 5 August, the team lost 4–1 at home to AJ Auxerre.[5]
