Jeremy Allen White

Jeremy Allen White (born February 17, 1991) is an American actor. He is known for his roles as Lip Gallagher in the Showtime comedy-drama series Shameless (2011–2021) and as chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto in the Hulu comedy-drama series The Bear (2022–). For the latter, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and won a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics' Choice Television Award.

White has also appeared in the Amazon Prime Video thriller series Homecoming (2018) and in films such as Afterschool (2008), Twelve (2010), Bad Turn Worse (2013), After Everything (2018), The Rental (2020), and Fremont (2023).

Early life

Jeremy Allen White was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City on February 17, 1991,[1] to parents Eloise Zeigler and Richard White.[2] He grew up in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood.[1] His mother is from North Carolina.[3] Throughout elementary school, he was a dancer who performed ballet, jazz, and tap. Upon entering a new middle school dance program at the age of 13, he had a change of heart and decided to pursue acting.[4] He attended the Professional Performing Arts School in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan.

Career

White had his first acting roles in 2006, first in the film Beautiful Ohio and then in the series Conviction.[5] In 2011, he landed his breakout role as Phillip "Lip" Gallagher on the Showtime series Shameless.[6] He also appeared in Homecoming in 2018.[5]

In 2022, White was cast in the lead role of the Hulu series The Bear. He plays the troubled but brilliant New York chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto, who returns to his hometown of Chicago to save his deceased brother's failing restaurant. To prepare for the role, he attended classes at the Institute of Culinary Education alongside his co-star Ayo Edebiri.[7] The role has won him a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2023.[8]

Personal life

White married actress Addison Timlin on October 18, 2019.[9] They have two daughters, born October 2018 and December 2020.[10][11] Timlin filed for divorce in May 2023.[12]
