The name Huejúcar means 'Place of Willows' in Nahuatl. It is located approximately 240 km from the state capital, Guadalajara, and is adjacent to Santa María de los Ángeles and Tepetongo. The municipality shares its border with the state of Zacatecas.
History
The city of Huejucar can trace its history back to the time before the creation of Nueva Galicia in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1530, Pedro Almíndez Chirinos passed through and conquered the area in the name of Spain during his voyage from Cuitzeo, Michoacán, to Tepic, Nayarit.[3] On March 13, 1837, a decree was issued, stating that Huejucar would become a part of the Colotlan Municipality. Later, on November 9, 1861, Huejucar gained municipal status and, twelve years after that, on September 24, 1873, it received the title of Villa.
Geography
The town of Huejucar, despite its average elevation being higher than that of the alpine city of Denver, Colorado in the United States, is situated in a semiarid region with monsoonal weather primarily during the summer months, notably in July and August. The town receives an average annual rainfall of 530.30 mm (20.878 in) and maintains an average temperature of 17.4°C (63.3°F). During the summer, temperatures can reach highs averaging 38.3°C (100.9°F), while in the winter, they can drop to lows averaging 0.8°C (33.4°F).
Winds predominantly gust from the northeast, influenced by the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains to the west. The town itself is situated at an average elevation of about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet), while the municipality exhibits a significant variation in elevation, ranging from as low as 1,750 meters (5,740 feet) in the valleys to as high as 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) in the mountainous areas on the western edge, near the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains.[4]
To the west, the landscape features hydrothermal streams and ponds, while to the east and northeast, the terrain opens up into the expansive Mexican Plateau region situated between the Sierra Madre Occidental and Oriental regions."
Mexican Federal Highway 23 runs north to south, connecting Huejucar at its southern terminus to the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, Jalisco, and extending to its northern terminus in Fresnillo, Zacatecas.
Flora and fauna
The vegetation in most of the territory is scarce, consisting primarily of drought-resistant plants such as Vachellia farnesiana, mesquite, pitaya, Opuntia ficus-indica, agave, and a few species of populus, pine, and other trees, though the latter are in smaller proportions.
Annual Festivities
Huejucar's annual fair, which typically lasts for 7-10 days, begins in late September and continues until early October. This festival has been a tradition for decades, attracting entire families from neighboring towns such as Colotlán, Jerez Zacatecas, and Santa María de los Ángeles to enjoy Huejucar and its traditional celebration. The primary purpose of this event is to honor San Francisco De Assis, the municipality's patron saint, deeply revered by the residents of Huejucar, Jalisco.
The festival offers a wide range of enjoyable activities for people of all ages. One month before the event, three female contestants participate in the competition for the title of 'Queen of the Fair.' The queen will represent the festivities, and locals in Huejucar will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate. Live music is one of the most prominent forms of entertainment featured at the fair, with many well-known performers and bands gracing the stage, including Regulo Carro, Chuy Lizarraga, Aldo Trujillo, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, and Ramon Ayala, to name just a few. During the live performances, you'll see many people enjoying themselves and dancing to the rhythm of the music.
Additionally, there are numerous carnival games and rides to keep the younger generations entertained. Jaripeos (rodeos) are another major attraction that draws many Charro enthusiasts to the Lienzo charro to witness the thrills of Charrería sportsmanship. Moreover, there is a wide variety of restaurants and food stands available for the enjoyment of attendees.
