Plot
Masahiro Setagawa has stopped believing in heroes as he believes that heroes do not truly exist, especially since he has been getting into a lot of trouble. He's been coerced into joining a gang and is often bullied and used as a gopher boy. However, soon an infamous street fighter named Kousuke Ooshiba, or the "Bear Killer" inadvertently saves him. This man happens to be the older brother of his best friend Kensuke Ooshiba and his current homeroom teacher. Now Kousuke has claimed Masahiro as his "underling" and promises to protect him, but the feelings seem to run far deeper for both. Meanwhile, Kensuke is reunited with an old friend Asaya Hasekura, a popular pretty boy who declares his love for Kensuke and leaves Kensuke confused and unsure.

1 | "In the Beginning, He Wouldn't Tell Me Anything" Transcription: "Hajimari wa, Itsumo Oshiete Moraenai." (Japanese: はじまりは、いつも教えてもらえない。) | July 8, 2017
Masahiro Setagawa is a middle-schooler introduced as an errand boy for a local gang, and declares his disdain for Heroes that disappointed him growing up. One night, a thug called the "Bear Killer" targets Masahiro's gang whilst he is absent and Masahiro comments on how he sounds like a hero. Time skips and Masahiro and Kensuke Ooshiba, his friend, are graduating from Middle School. During a flashback, we are shown Masahiro running away from home one evening because his prostitute mother has a client over in their small home. Whilst outside, he meets Kensuke looking after a cat. Kensuke and Masahiro take the cat to Kensuke's home at Kensuke's insistence that Masahiro help him because he doesn't know how to look after it. On the way there, Kensuke talks about his childhood friend, Asaya Hasekura. When they arrive, Kensuke's brother, Kousuke Ooshiba aka the "Bear Killer" comes home and finds them. Cut to the present, Masahiro and Kensuke are now in Highschool and find they are in the same class with Hasekura. Kensuke runs away, awkward after having not spoken in so long after being cruel to Hasekura in the past. Masahiro receives a phone call from Kousuke in which Masahiro tells him that his brother and he are in the same class. Two girls approach Kensuke and pressure him for help getting Hasekura's number. Hasekura approaches Kensuke and tries to start a conversation, but Kensuke runs away again. Meanwhile, Masahiro sees the gang he used to hang around with outside his school gates, and tries to hide, until Kensuke spots him and calls out to him. Kensuke and Masahiro then run away from the gang chasing them and hide in a nearby park. They are almost caught until Kousuke appears and scares off the thugs. The episode ends with Kousuke telling them he is their new math teacher and is moving back home, much to Kensuke's dismay.
2 | "The Days Go On, But There's More" Transcription: "Guruguru Mainichi, Dakedo Motto" (Japanese: ぐるぐる毎日、だけどもっと。) | July 15, 2017
The episode starts with a flashback of Hasekura telling Kensuke he can no longer play with Kensuke as he is moving. Kensuke reacts poorly and cuts off their friendship. Cut to the present, Kensuke wakes up and tells his family he doesn't want to go to school because he'll have to meet Hasekura, but Kousuke insists he goes. Kousuke then introduces himself as their maths teacher to the new class, and Mitsuru Fukushige, Jirou Yoshida, and Tsuyoshi Yamabe interact with Masahiro and Kensuke, curious about the new teacher. The girls call out to Kensuke and demand he asks Hasekura more invasive questions. Cut to Ayaka Houjou, Natsuo Nanaoka, and Kousuke at the "Relax Bar Mary" where his friends celebrate Kousuke's return. The next day, Kousuke greets Hasekura, reminiscing about the old days. Later, Coach Gozu orders Kensuke to help Hasekura gather materials for the next class. Kensuke is annoyed at how nonchalant Hasekura is and gets angry, and Hasekura tells him he isn't really calm and that he misses Kensuke. Hasekura goes to kiss Kensuke but they are interrupted before they can kiss. Oblivious, Kensuke is just happy they have made up and walks home with Hasekura, in which he asks Hasekura if he has a girlfriend for the girls in their class. The next day, Hasekura walks to school with Kensuke but drags him to the side when he believes Kensuke "doesn't get it". He then kisses Kensuke under a bridge, confesses to him and gives him an ultimatum, "sleep with me, or cut ties with me."
3 | "Like a Teeny, Tiny Ray of Light" Transcription: "Sore wa, Chiisana Chiisana Hikari no You ni." (Japanese: それは、ちいさなちいさな光のように。) | July 22, 2017
The next morning, Kensuke is angry with Hasekura and thinks that he would rather cut ties with him. He then sees Hasekura being dropped off at school by an older woman, who he mistakes as his girlfriend. Kensuke goes to Masahiro for advice - in which Masahiro suggests Hasekura's confession was maybe a joke. Hasekura is then jealous of Masahiro during lunch together, leaving Masahiro uncomfortable under Hasekura's glare. Later, Kousuke then tells Masahiro not to get involved in their issue as Hasekura drags Kensuke off to pressure him for an answer. Kensuke agrees to let Hasekura touch him for 5 minutes in order for them to "return back to normal" and both end up running over the timer. Hasekura cannot accept being friends after what they did, and forcefully kisses Kensuke after declaring they were never just "friends". Hasekura begins skipping school. Masahiro gives advice and claims that Kensuke is unfair leaving Hasekura in limbo instead of rejecting or accepting him. They then meet Ayaka outside of school, and Kensuke remembers that the woman who dropped Hasekura off that morning was not his girlfriend but his sister. Kensuke then runs off to Hasekura's house, only to not get an answer at the door because Hasekura was at the hospital. He then leaves his bag and climbs up to a mountain that the two explored together as kids. Hasekura returns home and finds Kensuke's bag and begins climbing the mountain. When they meet, Hasekura clearly explains his feelings this time. They return to Hasekura's home where Kensuke realizes his feelings match Hasekura's, and they hug in bed together.
4 | "A Hunch, Hidden by Fragrant Smoke" Transcription: "Yokan wa, Kuyuru Kemuri ni Kakureteru." (Japanese: 予感は、くゆる煙にかくれてる。) | July 29, 2017
The episode starts with Ayaka and Kousuke discussing Kensuke and Hasekura's new relationship, expressing their worries and happiness at the new relationship before Kousuke states he has to go home. At Kousuke's home, Masahiro is making dinner whilst Mitsuru, Jirou, and Tsuyoshi play games and discuss Hasekura and Kensuke's new relationship whilst Kensuke and Hasekura cuddle upstairs. Hasekura sulks when Kensuke suggests joining the rest of them, and lets Hasekura pamper him in exchange for going downstairs. They all have dinner together, and afterward, Kousuke asks Masahiro to go get cigarettes for him from the local store. Shortly after sending him, Kousuke realizes Masahiro cannot buy them because he is a minor and rushes off after him. On the way back together, Kousuke tells Masahiro that he notices the way Masahiro looks at him after watching how Masahiro envies Kensuke and Hasekura, and that they can never be together because Kousuke cannot return his feelings. This shocks Masahiro to the point that he begins avoiding the Ooshiba residence and he gets a part-time job to try and forget about what Kousuke said and potential his feelings. After work, Masahiro finds his mother with a client again at their home and runs away. Whilst out, he meets Tsunehito Houjou, an eccentric detective who threatens to call the cops on Masahiro for being out after curfew, and for being a panty thief. He then recognizes Masahiro's student handbook and calls Kousuke instead. Kousuke tries to talk to Masahiro about everything but Masahiro gets out of his car and runs home. The next day, Hasekura teases Masahiro about his potential feelings after Masahiro is zoned out in class. He is so zoned out that Masahiro forgets to get lunch until it is all sold out, and a fellow classmate Satou gives him a sandwich after she bought too much. Kousuke sees this and feels jealous at the interaction. Kousuke goes over and explains that he notice Masahiro avoiding him, and explains that he told Masahiro that for his own good so that he could get over him. Masahiro claims it isn't what Kousuke thinks and that he's "normal" and likes girls. Kousuke gets mad at Masahiro's lies and tells him that although he can't return his feelings, he can't ignore a student in need. Kousuke then kisses Masahiro before walking off like nothing happened.
5 | "A Person Worthy of Love" Transcription: "Ai Suru ni Taru, Sonzai." (Japanese: 愛するに足る、存在。) | August 5, 2017
Masahiro is in a daze cooking food in the Ooshiba household. As he grabs Kensuke from his room, the other boys peak at the food and see it is not fit for human consumption like it normally is. The next day whilst walking to school, Masahiro can't stop thinking about the kiss with Kousuke and resolves to forget about it, but Kousuke makes it difficult for him after acting normal. Kensuke, Hasekura and Masahiro decide to study for a math test at the Ooshiba household, before Hasekura and Kensuke offer to go out to the store for Kensuke's mother. Whilst alone, Kensuke's mother shows Masahiro their family photo albums. Kousuke comes home after drinking with his friends and startles Masahiro. Masahiro runs out, shocked and awkward. Kousuke reflects on his past so far. Kousuke then goes out to the "Relax Bar Mary" to meet his friends - he is distracted but claims he cannot go home because there are too many kids there bothering him. Houjou arrives and claims that Kousuke trying to protect Masahiro is futile and is really depriving Masahiro. A flashback to Masahiro's time in middle school from Kousuke's perspective shows how fond Kousuke is of Masahiro, in which Masahiro asks to be Kousuke's underling because he admires Kousuke a lot. The episode ends back in the present with Masahiro's old thug friends finding him on the street after he had rushed out of Kousuke's place.
6 | "My Savior, Be Free" Transcription: "Kyuuseishu yo, Jiyuu de Are." (Japanese: 救世主よ、自由であれ。) | August 12, 2017
Masahiro is surrounded by the old gang, who seem to be angry with him for hanging out with the "Bear Killer" who has systematically taken out all the local gangs, until Toru the leader expresses his relief that Masahiro is safe and alright. After hearing about the multiple gangs involved in the revenge against Kousuke, Masahiro quickly returns to his errand boy position in order to protect Kousuke, and quickly rushes to buy the gang their usuals. Only this time he forgets the anti-social Yabase's cheese. Once Masahiro rushes off to fix his mistake, Yabase flies into a rage and attacks another gang member. Masahiro begins to come to school late, and starts to avoid Kousuke, Kensuke and the others, not wanting them to find out he's returned to the gang life for their safety. He claims he is working at the ramen shop, but then afterward goes to the gang. The usual gang at Ooshiba's house comments that Kensukes mother's cooking is terrible and Hasekura begins to visit the ramen shop to cleanse his palette after the food. During a visit, Hasekura sees the thugs waiting outside the ramen shop and realises they're there for Masahiro. Masahiro begs Hasekura not to say anything. After Kousuke begins making mistakes at work, Hasekura then yells at Kousuke for his flippant attitude and for ignoring his feelings for Masahiro. Later, Masahiro tries to ignore the gang but he believes they arrive at his house. Just as he's worried they're about to break in, Kousuke is the one to break in instead.
7 | "The High School Boys Howl" Transcription: "Danshi Koukousei, Hoeru." (Japanese: 男子高校生、吠える。) | August 19, 2017
The usual friends, apart from Kousuke and Masahiro, are at the Ooshiba house looking at old memories, when Mitsuru notices Yabase behind Masahiro in one of the photos. At Masahiro's house, Kousuke is worried about the state of the house and the neglect Masahiro is facing from his mother. Once Masahiro realizes he cannot keep the thugs a secret from Kousuke any longer, he confesses. Kousuke gets angry that someone he cares about is trying to deal with it all alone, claiming he cannot ignore someone he loves when they're in so much pain. Masahiro gets angry back, retorting that Kousuke rejected him first. Kousuke argues that his initial rejection was shock therapy so that Masahiro would realize his own feelings for Kousuke after Kousuke was unsure what to do and panicked. As Masahiro is expressing how he isn't good enough for Kousuke, the thugs arrive at his house. Kousuke answers the door despite Masahiro's protests. The thugs, Kousuke and Masahiro go to an abandoned factory to "finish it" once and for all. During the fight which Kousuke is winning, Yabase who is incredibly jealous and obsessed with Masahiro becomes furious that Masahiro gets a normal life and left the gang world for Kousuke. Yabase rushes at Kousuke with a chisel in an attempt to stab him, but Masahiro gets in the way and protects Kousuke, getting stabbed in the arm instead. Kousuke flies into a rage before Masahiro stops him. Toru, the gang head, admits that they went too far and chastises Yabase for fighting dirty. They agree to leave and never bother Kousuke again, so long as Masahiro never shows his face around them again. Masahiro admits that he loves Kousuke and cries in Kousuke's arms. Masahiro is later discharged from the hospital and goes out to get ramen with the boys to celebrate, however Kousuke pulls Masahiro back. Hasekura notices this and tells the rest of them to go ahead and they'll catch up. Kousuke and Masahiro go to the Ooshiba house instead, where Kousuke teases Masahiro by marking tests in silence and suggests Masahiro takes a bath (which is commonly an innuendo for suggesting sex in Japan). They then kiss and go upstairs, where Kousuke asks Masahiro to stop being his sidekick and become his secret wife. It is then implied they had sex after Masahiro asks him to be gentle with him, which Kousuke states he cannot guarantee.
8 | "Inextinguishable Emotions Push Me Forward" Transcription: "Tomedonai Kimochi, Senaka o Oshite." (Japanese: とめどない気持ち、背中を押して。) | August 26, 2017
Kousuke kisses Masahiro at school now that they're a couple, and Masahiro pushes him away, claiming they cannot do that there. Kousuke relents. Masahiro comes to Hasekura for relationship advice after giving him ramen coupons as a bribe for listening, because he feels awkward telling Kensuke about it. A classmate, Monika Matsuzawa, confesses to her friend that she has a crush on Kousuke, and Masahiro overhears it. Kousuke asks Masahiro to walk home with him and admits he's starving because it's test season and he hasn't had time to eat during school time. On the way back, they drop by a nearby pet shop to get food for Sasa because she is almost out, and end up spending a long time in it because Masahiro is excited at the animals - in particular, a dog named Shigeo that looks similar to Mitsuru, and even shares a similar name (Shigeo/Fuku-"Shige"). At the house, Yuusei "Yunge" Yuge is introduced as a new friend and cook for the friends. Somehow, they get onto the topic of girls they all like, and the boys suggest Masahiro likes the cute and cuddly type, like Sasa, the cat, and Satou. Kousuke gets jealous and makes sarcastic comments, and Masahiro comforts him. The next day, Hasekura tells Kensuke his brother and Masahiro are dating. Masahiro cooks Kousuke a lunch, but doesn't find the right time to give him it, and instead sees Monika give him lunch and runs away upset before Kousuke can see him. Hasekura warns Kousuke not to do anything bold at school with Masahiro. At the Ooshiba house that night, Kensuke and Hasekura give Masahiro's lunch to Kousuke. Kousuke explains that he rejected the lunch from Monika earlier, claiming he only accepts lunch made by the hands of his beautiful wife. Masahiro then kisses Kousuke for the first time by himself. Kousuke then shows Masahiro that he has adopted Shigeo.
9 | "Where My Feelings are Headed" Transcription: "Kono Omoi no, Mukau Saki." (Japanese: この想いの、向かう先) | September 2, 2017
The friends, apart from Masahiro, Kousuke and Jirou, go to the supermarket. Mitsuru is suspicious that Masahiro likes spending time with Kousuke more than them, which Hasekura counters by saying maybe Masahiro just doesn't like people who read into things too much. Kensuke defuses the situation, but Mitsuru doesn't like that Hasekura and Masahiro are close. Meanwhile, at school, Masahiro helps Kousuke move some materials. When Kousuke explains he is jealous because he misses Masahiro, Masahiro kisses him, and Jirou sees from another building through a window. Jirou hurries back to the gang and says he saw Kousuke and Masahiro kissing. Mitsuru calls Masahiro and Kousuke kissing disgusting, and Hasekura starts trying to defuse the situation by saying he must've seen incorrectly, but Kensuke stops him. Kensuke yells at Mitsuru and tells him that Kousuke and Masahiro are both his family, and if he bad-mouths them, he can leave. As he's leaving, he runs into Masahiro, who has heard everything. Hasekura berates Masahiro for being caught, but the other boys do not mind the discovery. Kensuke is still angry at Mitsuru, who begins to avoid the boys, but finds he can't get on very well with his new group of friends. After a conversation with Kousuke, Masahiro resolves to explain everything to Mitsuru, who also wants to explain his feelings to Masahiro. It's then explained that Mitsuru is just confused about which one is the top in the relationship and how he doesn't understand why Masahiro is going out with an old man, but also wishing Masahiro trusted him earlier. They then have a barbeque, but Mitsuru has to sit outside. Kousuke admits that he saw Jirou across the hall right before Masahiro kissed him, but decided to keep quiet so that his friends understood Masahiro better. Kousuke is then kicked outside alongside Mitsuru.
10 | "Why Is It So Hard To Be Happy?" Transcription: "Shiawasette, Konna ni Kurushii." (Japanese: 幸せって、こんなに苦しい。) | September 9, 2017
Kousuke tries to cuddle Masahiro in front of their friends in the Ooshiba house, but Masahiro refuses. Kousuke gets annoyed and drags Masahiro out of the house suddenly and into his car, leaving the friends to cook for themselves. Kousuke takes him to a hotel room and they cuddle in the bed, with Kousuke explaining that he's been tired from work and just wants to hug his boyfriend for a while. The next morning, they leave the hotel room and go to school. Their friends tease Masahiro and ask him where he was all night, which he lies about. Mitsuru warns him not to do anything to draw attention to them, but Kousuke interrupts by telling Masahiro that they have been found out. Later that evening, they go to the "Relax Bar Mary" and meet Ayaka and Houjou who claim they have seen them. Houjou is explained to be Ayaka's husband and therefore Hasekura's brother-in-law. They threaten the boys, claiming that Kousuke is a predator and that Masahiro was only a victim and seduced by Kousuke, therefore Masahiro will not get in trouble. Masahiro relents that he is the one who seduced Kousuke, and Houjou and Ayaka claim Masahiro has passed the "test", despite Kousuke saying it wasn't necessary. Masahiro is troubled by their relationship and worries Kousuke will have to give up the job he loves if they're together. Kousuke makes a sudden date with Masahiro and takes him to a cliff-side to watch the sunset, explaining that there's a meteor shower that's good to see there on Sunday. There, Masahiro is insecure and scared that Kousuke will be seen with Masahiro and fired, and runs away. (There is an after-credits scene about the principal asking Miss Kaidae, another teacher, about Kousuke.)
11 | "That's Why I Just Want You to Smile" Transcription: "Dakara, Tada Waratte Ite Hoshii." (Japanese: だから、ただ笑っていてほしい。) | September 16, 2017
Mitsuru and Yunge see Kousuke enter the principal's office, where he is told he is no longer a temporary teacher. The boys panic and tell Kensuke, who rushes to talk to his brother. Masahiro is skipping school until Kensuke sends him a text telling him that his brother might be fired. Masahiro rushes to school with the intention to quit school so that Kousuke is not fired, but Kensuke stops him on time. Kensuke explains that they were wrong, and Kousuke is actually being made a permanent member of staff instead. Masahiro, Kensuke, and Hasekura then go to Hasekura's house to plan a surprise party to celebrate his new job, but Masahiro is still concerned that their relationship is a threat to Kousuke's future. Hasekura suggests that Kousuke might dumb Masahiro if he doesn't get over his insecurity, and Kensuke gets angry at Masahiro's apathy towards potentially being dumped. Masahiro runs out into the rain with Kensuke chasing him. Houjou picks up Kousuke and comments on how he seems apathetic to the problem in their relationship. Masahiro takes shelter from the rain at the "Relax Bar Mary" and receives advice from Natsuo about what to do. Kensuke returns home and gets angry at an apathetic Kousuke as Masahiro takes a train to a random beach. Kousuke rings Masahiro and Masahiro congratulates him for getting a promotion and being a great teacher, before he breaks up with Kousuke and throws his phone away in the ocean.
12 | "The Kindest Place In The World" Transcription: "Sekai de Ichiban, Yasashii Basho." (Japanese: 世界で1番, やさしい場所。) | September 23, 2017
Masahiro meets Kensuke, his mother, and Hasekura out shopping the next day. Masahiro explains that the surprise party doesn't matter anymore because they've broken up. At the same time, Kousuke leaves a letter at Masahiro's house. He then finds Masahiro at the nearby park that Kensuke and he hid in from the gang in the first episode. Kousuke explains that he understands why Masahiro broke up with him, and that he didn't realize the strain he'd put on Masahiro with their relationship. Kousuke then asks to visit the pet store again to learn what cat food Sasa likes because she's nearly run out. On the way back, Kousuke explains that he doesn't want to break up with Masahiro which surprises him, as he has misunderstood their conversation from the day before. Kousuke asks Masahiro to think over their breakup and to meet him at the cliff-side they visited earlier that week if he decides to give them another try as a couple. The next day, before Masahiro's mom goes out for the night for Christmas, she mentions a letter she found from Kousuke in the door the day before. Masahiro says he won't read it before it won't change anything, but eventually, curiosity gets the better of him and he reads it. Masahiro realizes he wants to be with Kousuke and rushes to the meeting point hoping he isn't too late. Masahiro confesses that he loves Kousuke, and Kousuke confesses his feelings, too. They kiss and Kousuke gives Masahiro a ring, but unfortunately, it doesn't fit. |
