Background
Jason Derulo and Meghan Trainor first collaborated on the track "Painkiller" from Derulo's 2015 album Everything Is 4.[3] The following year, Trainor released the song "Me Too" as a single,[4] which was co-written by Derulo. Derulo spoke fondly about the experience of collaborating with her: "She's a sweetie, she's crazy, and we got along really well. I think that song was perfect for her because it's about loving yourself and not worrying about what haters say. It's just a dope, fun song."[5] Derulo and Trainor both achieved popularity on video-sharing service TikTok in subsequent years; Derulo achieved the viral hit song "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)" (2020) while Trainor experienced commercial success with her viral TikTok hit "Made You Look" (2022).[6] In 2023, they collaborated on the song "Hands on Me" which is slated to be released soon. Derulo performed a medley of it with his 2020 single "Take You Dancing" at the finale of season 18 of America's Got Talent.[2] It was released as a single by Atlantic Records on October 13, 2023.[1]
Reception
American Songwriter's Alex Hopper wrote: "The two pop heavyweights gave ['Stand by Me'] a sultry revamp. The throwback feel of the song is in line with Trainor's doo-wop-inspired sound".[7] In a negative review, Sydney Brasil of Exclaim! stated: "Best described as horny housewife music, the track has the typical crispy Top 40 vocal production [...] Not to mention how corny its Rated PG radio-friendly randiness is. 'She was, she was, she was, she was the girl next door, that's my fine ass neighbour,' Derulo sings, diminishing his own audience's intelligence by acting like we don't know what calling a woman "the girl next door" implies. I'll be asking someone else to water my plants while I'm away, thanks."[8]
