Summary

The film covers American poet Nikki Giovanni's life and the historical periods she lived through from the civil rights movement and Black Arts Movement to Black Lives Matter.[1][2] It was narrated by actress Taraji P. Henson.[3]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on January 20.[4] It received the Grand Jury Prize award for U.S. Documentary Competition.[5] The film was also screened at the 2023 True/False Film Festival.[6] In August 2023, HBO Documentary Films had acquired U.S. and Canada television and streaming rights to the film.[7]

Critical reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of 16 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.6/10.[8] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 74 out of 100, based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[9]
