The song had originally been intended for Al Green, with whom both Mitchell and Randle had worked in the past. When it was eventually passed over, it came to Simmons's attention, who then added some music and lyrics of his own and co-wrote the finished version with Mitchell and Randle.
Cash Box said that "an unusual, synthesized introduction instantly lends a warm feeling" and that it contains "deep layers of vocal harmony."[1] Record World said that the song "emphasizes synthesizer work and vocal harmonies, and bears [the Doobie Brothers'] melodic trademarks."[2]
