History

The school first opened in 1926. The first class graduated in 1929. Future Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young was denied entry to the school on the basis of his race in the early 30's. Later when recounting his experience he said "A brother in the order asked if was Hawaiian. I told him, "No, brother, I'm colored.' He tore up the application form right in front of my nose. I'll never forget. It was my first real jolt about what it means to be black."[3]

Athletics

Warren De La Salle has a rich tradition of athletics throughout the history of the school. Within the last decade, the school has won 5 state championships in football, 1 in hockey, 1 in basketball, and 1 in baseball.
