Brenton Awa

Brenton Awa is currently the youngest Hawaii State Senator and one of two Republicans in the 25-member chamber. He was officially sworn in at the Hawaii State Capitol to represent District 23 (Kāne‘ohe, Kahalu‘u through Lā‘ie, Kahuku to Mokulē‘ia, Schofield Barracks, Kunia Camp) for the 23rd district on January 18, 2023.

Early life and education

Awa was born in Kaʻaʻawa, Hawaii, raised in Kahaluʻu, and graduated from Kahuku High & Intermediate School in 2004.[1] He earned his Bachelor's degree in Speech Communication, Leadership at Clarion University of Pennsylvania.

Awa has deep roots in Ko‘olauloa and Ko‘olaupoko. The father of three currently lives in Kahalu‘u.

Career

Prior to entering politics, Awa had spent nearly a decade as a TV News Anchor and Reporter for KITV4 Island News.[2] Three years after joining KITV, he became the anchor of Good Morning Hawaii.[3] His broadcast career began in 2009 as the last intern for KGMB9 News prior to being one of the first new hires at Hawaii News Now following the KGMB/KHNL/KFVE merger. Awa was elected to the Hawaii Senate in November 2022.[4][5]
