The ounce (avoirdupois[note 1]) is a unit of mass ("weight") equal to 116 of a pound or about 28 g.[note 2][1] The ounce is herein abbreviated as oz. When converting a recipe to metric, it is usually sound to make the following approximations.

Notes

  1. Note that the ounce avoirdupois is distinct from the fluid ounce, the troy ounce and apothecaries ounce, the latter two are not used in cooking..
