The citrus fruits are semi-tropical fruits that are usually eaten raw without the peel. Shavings from the peel, called zest, are sometimes used in cooking. The juice has various uses, especially as a beverage. Citrus fruits mix sweet and tangy together in a blend that no other ingredient can match.
Types of citrus fruit include:
- kumquat – often eaten whole, and somewhat frequently cooked
- orange – popular as juice, fresh fruit, and marmalade
- lemon – used for lemonade and to make foods sour
- lime – often substituted for lemon
- grapefruit – popular as a breakfast food
- tangerine – like an orange, but sweeter and easier to peel
- ugli fruit – like a huge and ugly tangerine
- pummelo – huge mild-tasting predecesor to the grapefruit
