It is a city that relied on coal mining. With a decline in coal demand, the mines closed in 1980s and the population shrank from a peak of 120,000 down to about 8,000 remaining.

The only hotel in the city, Hotel Mount Racey, announced "temporarily" closure in March 2020 due to COVID-19. It has not reopened since.
