Strömstad is a city in Bohuslän on the west coast of Sweden, close to the Norwegian border. While only home of 6000 people, it is for historical reasons often referred to as a city. Strömstad is a fishing town and a popular holiday destination. In the fish shops along the quayside you can eat fresh shrimp and fish. In the area, there are a number of prehistoric monuments, among which stone rings, stone ships, rock carvings, burial mounds, etc.

By bus

Timeekspressen has 6 daily departures to Oslo, leaving on top of the hour, every two hours between 8 and 16. Swebusexpress buses also stops here on their Göteborg - Oslo route.

By train

There is about 4-5 daily departures to Göteborg by Västtrafik. In the summer the Swedish Railways (SJ) runs a X2000 express train to Stockholm twice a day.

By ferry

There are several ferry's every day across the outflow of the Oslo fjord to Sandefjord in Norway with a Color line ferry. The previous connection to Langesund was discontinued in December 2008.

By plane

The nearest airports are:

  • Oslo Gardermoen, Norway. Around 170 km distance. Major international airport.
  • Trollhättan Vänersborg, Sweden. Around 120 km distance. Small domestic airport.
  • Göteborg Landvetter, Sweden. Around 180 km distance. Medium size international airport.

Strömstad

The inner city is small, so walking is recommended. Västtrafik organises local buses.

See

  • Blomsholm. Iron age museum area 
  • Koster Islands.  Boats depart at up to 16 times a day in the high season, right next to the Tourist Information Centre (travel time about 1 hour). The islandsare ideal for a one or also several day trip;are completely car-free, and while bicycles may be used on Sydkoster, on Nordkoster, which is for the most part a nature reserve, only a few of the main routes are open for bicycle use. Suitable destinations for a day trip on Nordkoster are the reserve, which can be circumnavigated by a walk of about 1.5 to 2 hours pure walking time, and on Sydkoster, for example the Natureum at Ekenäs brygga. There are restaurants on both islands, but only on Sydkoster a supermarket (So closed), which is located in the middle of the island, this should be considered when preparing the trip. Accommodation must be booked in advance, also the campsite on Nordkoster.
