Neom is a futurist planned megacity being built in northern Saudi Arabia.

Understand

Neom is the latest and most ambitious in a series of Saudi megaprojects. The wildest project in Neom is The Line, a linear city that's meant to be 170 kilometres (110 mi) long, 500 metres high and 200 metres wide, with a high-speed train running down the middle, but plans also include the Oxagon, a 250 sq.km. floating industrial city, the Trojena ski resort in the middle of the desert, and more. It remains to be seen how many of them will see the light of day.

As of 2017, the first phase of the project was scheduled for completion by 2025. By July 2022, only two buildings had been constructed.

Marriott is set to open the first three hotels in Neom at Sindalah Island as early as 2024. In the meantime, though, your only options are on the mainland.

  • Royal Tulip Sharma Hotel. While floating pleasure palaces remain under construction, this rather more down to earth resort hotel is your best actual option if you can score a booking. Facilities and service do not quite match the promised five stars.
