Beira Baixa is a former province of the Central region of Portugal. It roughly corresponds to the current Castelo Branco District. It is mostly rural, except for the cities of Castelo Branco and Covilhã.

Cities

  • 🌍 Castelo Branco — a good base for visiting the International Tagus Natural Park and the Serra da Estrela Natural Park
  • 🌍 Covilhã — close to mountains that offer dramatic scenery and a great environment for those fond of hiking, camping, mountain climbing and skiing
  • 🌍 Fundão — its excellent cherries are celebrated in the city's gastronomy and its annual festival
  • 🌍 Idanha-a-Nova — with Monsanto, an ancient fortified village perched on the side of the mountain with tiny streets carved in the rocks
  • 🌍 Proença-a-Nova — a town rich in forests with a museum dedicated to them
