Ujuni Ahmed

Ujuni Ahmed (born 1987, in Mogadishu) is a Finnish-Somali human rights activist advocating for women and girls rights and leading campaign against female genital mutilation and honor-related violence and restrictions in Somalia. She is the executive director of Fenix Helsinki. She was awarded the Finnish PEN Freedom of Speech Award.[1][2]

Background and activism

Ujuni Ahmed was born in the Somali capital Mogadishu. Her family moved to Finland as refugees when she was three years old following the outbreak of the Somali Civil War.[3] She is the executive director of Fenix Helsinki and co-authored the organization’s report on female genital mutilation in Finland in 2017. She criticizes Finish government for taking no signification action against female circumcision and advocates for law to criminalize female genital mutilation.[4][5]

She was awarded the Finish PEN freedom of speech award in 2020 for using freedom of speech to defend the rights of vulnerable women and girls against honor-related violence and restriction and female genital mutilation in Finland. In 2022, she was honored with the Finland Award by the Ministry of Education and Culture in recognition of her human rights activism.[6][7][8]
