Biography

Susie Morgenstern was born in Newark, New Jersey. She has two older sisters, Sandra and Effie, 8 years and 5 years older than her respectively. Their father, Meyer Hoch, was born in Poland; their mother, Sylvia Needleman, was born in Brooklyn, to Russian parents.[3][4]

She married the mathematician Jacques Morgenstern in 1967, and they settled in Nice (he died in 1994, after having been her first reader).[5]

She began her career as an author (in French) and illustrator for children. She published, in particular, at the School of Leisure, books that have become classics of children's literature: The Sixth, The First Time I Was Sixteen, Confessions of a Big Potato and Love Letters from 0 to 10.[6]

She also taught English until 2005 at the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis.[6]

Susie Morgenstern says she is “furiously in love” with France. She sees writing as what helped her survive.[7] In 2021, she published an autobiographical story, My 18 exiles.[8]
