She was fielded by the Bhartiya Janta Party as their candidate in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, the year she joined politics.[11] She is also a recipient of the President’s Guide Award.[10]
1999 Lok Sabha Elections
There was a general view among the BJP’s top leadership that it needed a strong contender to face Congress in Haryana, which posed a big challenge for the BJP. It was then that present day Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in-charge of Haryana at the time for the BJP, proposed the name of Sudha Yadav to go up against Congress. Repeated attempts by the BJP leadership to convince her to contest the elections failed. Dejected, the leadership then tasked Narendra Modi with the responsibility of convincing her. She eventually agreed to contest the elections. In 1999, Modi donated Rs.11, given to him by his mother, to her election campaign and invited party workers to make contributions.[12] The decision turned out to be a turning point in her career as Sudha Yadav won the election against Rao Inderjeet Singh by a margin of a 1.39 lakh votes.[13] This win transformed her from a simple housewife to a successful politician having defeated a well-known, veteran politician. However, she could not win subsequent elections in 2004 and 2009.
Parliamentary Career
Sudha Yadav was a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence from 1999 to 2000, a member of the Committee on Official Language and a member of the Hindi Salahakar Samiti of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. From 2000 to 2001, she was also a member in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Empowerment of Women, and from 2000 to 2004, a member in the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Communications.
