1849 – The first passenger train service to Peekskill, New York, is inaugurated by the New Haven Railroad.[1]
1890 – American railroads forfeit all remaining unused land grants from the Pacific Railway Acts.[1]
1897 – The cable car powerhouse of Capital Traction Company in Washington, D.C., is destroyed by fire.[2]

1904 – New Haven Railroad completes the property acquisition of New London Street Railway.[3]
1906 – The last spike is driven in Ely, Nevada, completing construction of the Nevada Northern Railway.[4]
1930 – Work is completed on Prince Edward Island converting all 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge track to standard gauge.[5]
1935 – The last train operates on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in England.
1946 – The Illinois Central Railroad fully dieselizes all passenger trains that it is operating between Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri.
1962 – Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway runs its last regularly scheduled steam locomotive powered train, converting to diesel locomotives.[1]
1967 – Southern Pacific Railroad discontinues railway post office operations.[1]
1988 – Union Station in Washington, D.C., reopens for passenger train service.[1][2]
2000 – Canadian Pacific Railway sells 34.3 miles (55.2 km) of its Owen Sound subdivision to the town of Orangeville, Ontario, transferring operations on the line to the Orangeville and Brampton Rail Association Group.[5]

2005 – Arthur Sarkisian, head of the Public Relations Department for Armenia's Ministry of Transport, speaking at a United Nations meeting, announces that Armenia is investigating building a railway link with Iran that would completely bypass Turkey and Azerbaijan.[6]
2005 – Sixty years after World War II, Nederlandse Spoorwegen issues a statement formally apologizing for transporting Jewish people to Nazi concentration camps in Germany and Poland during the war.[7]
2005 – A group of transportation associations in Louisiana, including the Regional Transit Authority of New Orleans, Baton Rouge Capital Area Transit System, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) and Amtrak propose a plan to operate commuter trains between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.[8]
