19th century

1825 – The La Plaisance Bay Harbor Company receives a charter to build a half-mile railroad in Monroe, Michigan, the first charter issued in the area that will become that state.
1847 – The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, a predecessor of the New York Central Railroad, officially changes its name to Albany and Schenectady Railroad.
1851 – The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad, in New York state, is chartered.

20th century

1906 – Lygten Station opens in Copenhagen, Denmark, as the terminus of the Copenhagen–Slangerup Railway.
2000 – Canadian Pacific Railway announces that preserved H1b class 4-6-4 locomotive number 2816, which had been undergoing a restoration, will become the cornerstone of the railway's new heritage steam program.[1]

Deaths

1887 – Alexander Mitchell, president of Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad 1864-1887, dies (b. 1817).[2]
1888 – Thomas Crampton, English steam locomotive builder, dies (b. 1816).
1916 – Ephraim Shay, inventor of the Shay locomotive (b. 1839).
