Chiswick House is a neo-Palladian, neoclassical villa in Burlington Lane, Chiswick, in the London Borough of Hounslow. It was inherited by Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694-1753) and used as a summer retreat to get away from London. The architecture is an aatempt to create a Roman villa situated in Roman gardens. There have been many interepretations as to the purpose of the house. For example it has been suggested it was a Masonic temple or lodge. Another suggestion was as a Royal Palace awaiting the return of the exiled Stuart Monarchy. The gardens are filled with buildings of many architectural designs of many peiods such as Greek, Egyptian, Roman etc.
