This book was mainly written to advocate some of the political ideas of American Republicans, including positions and arguments on such issues as the war on terror, taxes, abortion, the death penalty, welfare, the war in Iraq, gun control, affirmative action, and the environment.

The book's title derives from the term "vast right-wing conspiracy", a phrase popularized by a 1995 memo by political opposition researcher Chris Lehane and referenced in 1998 by the then First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton.
