Nathalie Castillo

Nathalie Castillo (born 2 July 1983) is a Chilean journalist, unionist and politician of the Communist Party of Chile serving as a member of Chilean Chamber of Deputies from District 5 since 2022. She was president of the College of Journalists of Chile.[1][2]

Background and career

Nathalie Castillo was born in El Salvador mining camp to Luis Castillo Lagunas (father), a journalist and Marcelina Rojas Vega (mother). Raised in Coquimbo region, she received her basic education at School G- N° 327 of Manquehua (now Claudio Matte) in Combarbala commune and high school at the Calasanz School in Coquimbo. She earned a degree in journalism from University of La Serena.[3]

Her political career began at the University of La Serena where she served as leader of the Student Federation. She was a member of the communist Youth (JJCC) at the university and later served as secretary of the group. After graduation she practiced journalism and served as communication manager in both private and public organizations in Coquimbo region. She was chief of staff at Regional Ministerial Secretary of Health, Coquimbo Region. In the course of her journalism career, she served as president of the College of Journalists of Chile in Coquimbo Region and later became the national president of the college. She served as pro-secretary of the college between 2021 and 2022.[4]

She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies from District 5 covering Andacollo, Canela, Combarbalá , Coquimbo, Illapel, La Higuera, La Serena, Los Vilos, Monte Patria, Ovalle, Paiguano, Punitaqui, Río Hurtado, Salamanca and Vicuña  in the 2021 parliamentary election. She secured 12,304 or 5.20 per cent of the total valid votes. Castillo was inaugurated to the Chamber of Deputies on 11 March 2022 and was appointed to the committees on Culture, Arts and Communication and Water Resources and Desertification.[5] In April 2023, she moved a motion to probe mining companies for possible contamination of Choapa Province and its effects on the environment and health of the people.[6]
