List of urban-type settlements in Ukraine

Urban-type settlement (Ukrainian: селище міського типу, romanized: selysche mis'koho typu) was an administrative term for a type of human settlement in Ukraine from 1981 until 2023.

In 1981, when Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR created this administrative unit.[1] Urban-type settlement has been a designation used across many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the Soviet Union.

Ukraine became independent in 1991,[2] but retained the Soviet-era classifications of inhabited localities. On 1 January 2006, there were 885 urban-type settlements in Ukraine. In July 2023, this number had fallen to 881.[3]

On 24 October 2023, as part of wider decommunization in independent Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Law No. 8263 that abolished the concept of "urban-type settlement" in Ukraine, which he said was to facilitate "de-Sovietization of the procedure for solving certain issues of the administrative and territorial system of Ukraine."[4]
