1 | "Galloway" | Dumfries and Galloway | 4 September 2019 | N/A
Andy (structural engineer) and Jeanette (textiles manufacturing) build a 2-bedroom single-storey house at the top of a seaside cliff for themselves and their two dogs on the site of an old military listening station near Portpatrick. The build is a half-buried waterproof box built of concrete, blockwork and steel beams with a green roof. Building starts in November 2017 and Andy and Jeanette want to finish in a year for £250k. While Jeanette is away for her work in America half the time, Andy project manages the build himself while also managing their canal boat hire company in Yorkshire, a 5-hour trip. High winds and building control cause delays. Then one of the dogs gets a cancer diagnosis and passes away. Jeanette initially does not like the huge boulders that adorn the side of the house. The build finishes successfully in July 2019 with a 170k budget overrun.[12]
2 | "Lincolnshire" | East Midlands | 11 September 2019 | N/A
Entrepreneur Paul is a workaholic with a compulsion to get things done in the shortest time possible. So when he and wife Amy set out to build a giant new home on their 16-acre plot in Lincolnshire, he gives himself only 12 months to do it. The big problem is that this is no ordinary build – it’s five circular buildings made up of interlocking timber cylinders linked by raised wooden walkways that hang over a fishing lake, all inspired by Celtic round houses. It’s a vast and complicated endeavour, but Paul intends to throw his entire being into making it happen. From the get-go, Paul’s local team struggle with the devilishly tricky curves and angles of the cylinders and the ambitious schedule starts to slip. Desperate to get the timber superstructure watertight before autumn rains hit, extra manpower is thrown at the project. The budget spirals and Paul works almost day and night to complete the building in a year by sheer force of will. But this relentless drive begins to take a toll on Paul’s health, an old back injury leaving him in agony. Halfway through the build he’s admitted to hospital for an operation that could threaten the entire project.[13]

Dorran and Vereuschka have spent £375k on the plot and aim to spend less than £1M on the build, which they hope can be finished within two years. However, meticulous and micro-managing Dorran is unsatisfied with the quality of work of their builders, they part ways and Dorran intends to build the house himself, which is made more difficult by the fact that he is at sea for 5 weeks at a time, during which periods work stops. When the pandemic starts, Dorran decides to pause his captain job and the family moves into the half-finished house. The build is finished by June 2022, having cost more than £1M.
