Karachi Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine
The Karachi Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (KIRAN) is a cancer hospital in Karachi, Pakistan under the administrative control of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. KIRAN is one of nineteen medical centers in Pakistan providing patients access to diagnostic and treatment facilities either free of charge or at subsidized rates.[1]
Services
KIRAN was initially planned to have state of the art radiotherapy facilities. Subsequently, oncology and chemotherapy sectors were established to provide services at low cost to poor cancer patients in Karachi and some rural areas of Sindh and Baluchistan. The hospital currently provides clinical oncology, nuclear medicine, radiology, and pharmacy services.[2]
Besides conducting research on the cancer diagnosis and biopsy processes,[3] KIRAN organizes seminars and walks on the eve of World Cancer Day.[4][5]
Research
From 2002 until 2006, a study to evaluate the significance of prostate specific antigen and scan prostate cancer patients was conducted. Findings were first published in the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association.[6]
Treatment Charges
Compared to other nuclear medicine centers in Karachi, such as AKUH, Baqai Medical University, and Liaquat National Hospital, the cost of treatment at KIRAN is nearly three times lower.[7]
