Kaathal – The Core is an upcoming Indian Malayalam-language drama film starring Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles. It is directed by Jeo Baby and written by Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. The film is produced by Mammootty under the banner of Mammootty Kampany.

Jeo Baby was rumoured to direct Mammootty and Jyothika in his next in August 2022. Jeo later confirmed the rumours during the film's pre-production stage. That October, the film was officially announced and principal photography had commenced on the 20th, ending on 22 November. The music was composed by Mathews Pulickan while Salu K. Thomas and Francies Louis served as cinematographer and editor respectively.

Development

In August 2022, Jeo Baby was rumoured to direct a film starring Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles. However, he denied the rumours and revealed that he was not working on any projects.[4] Speaking to The Times of India in late-September, Jeo confirmed that he would be directing Mammootty in his next film and added that the latter would be producing the film under his banner of Mammootty Kampany. He also stated that the pre-production works had already begun. When asked about Jyothika's presence in the film, he answered that she was yet to sign the film and that the casting process was underway.[5][6]

On 18 October, the title of the film was announced officially as Kaathal – The Core and Jyothika's inclusion was confirmed, thereby marking her return to Malayalam cinema after a hiatus of 12 years. She was last seen in Seetha Kalyanam (2009). The writing team included Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. Jeo retained most of his technicians from his film The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) including cinematographer Salu K. Thomas, editor Francies Louis and music composer Mathews Pulickan.[7] About the film, Jeo said, "It is for the first time that I am working on a script that is not my own. But I heard the story and I liked it and felt that it would be good if Mammukka played the lead and he too liked it. We were considering options for his wife and Mammukka suggested Jyothika and she too, liked the story and said a 'yes'."[8]

Filming

Principal photography began on 20 October 2022 in Kochi with a customary pooja ceremony.[9][10] Jyothika joined the sets on 27 October.[11] Suriya, who is the husband of Jyothika, visited the sets on 9 November, when the film was being shot in Ernakulam.[12] Mammootty completed filming for his portions on 18 November[13] while Jyothika's was completed on 20 November.[14] Filming was wrapped up on 22 November, in a span of 34 days.[15]

Post-production

Post-production works began in late-January 2023.[16] In March 2023, K. S. Chithra recorded a song composed by Mathews Pulickan.[17]

Release

Kaathal – The Core was scheduled for a theatrical release, but was postponed, according to reports. Now its expected to release by December, 2023[18][19]
