Jonathan Clift

Marcus 'Jonathon ' Clift (born 1965) is a male retired British rower. Clift competed in the men's coxless four event at the 1984 Summer Olympics.[1] He started Rowing at Hollingworth Lake RC in 1979 under the performance coach Adrian Stott and represented GB in the 1982 World Junior Rowing Champs at Piediluco in Italy . Finishing 6th in the coxless pairs event with his partner Simon Larkin (Christchurch RC).

He then joined the recently formed Nottinghamshire County Rowing Association Squad at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham . This squad of elite rowers was under the guidance of Ian Wilson and Olympic medalist Hugh Mathieson .

The following year Clift was selected ‘reserve’ for the GB Senior Team at the 1983 World Rowing Champs in Duisburg ,West Germany.

In 1984 after extensive National Squad trials Clift was selected in the Stroke seat for the GB coxless four at the 1984 Olympic Rowing Regatta in Los Angeles .This being with his training partner and fellow NCRA squad member Martin Knight in the 3 seat . The crew also won the prestigious Stewards Cup at the ‘84 Henley Royal Regatta setting a new course record .

In 1986 he was part of the GB crew which won the Gold medal in men’s Quad Sculls at the U23 World Champs in Hamburg .

Subsequently after injury he turned to professional coaching and was successful both at national and international level . He produced high class crews at various clubs including ; Latymer School ,Thames RC , New College and Oxford University Boat Club .

His brother is 2x Olympic Rower and Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Adam Clift.[1]
