Gershasen

Gershasen is a Ortsgemeinde belonging to the city of Westerburg, Germany.

Geography

Location

Gershasen lies on a hill and is one Kilometer away from the Westerburg Station. Next to Gershasen are multiple Forests.

Neighbouring communities

Gershasen borders Westerburg to the east, Kölbingen to the West. Sainscheid sits south of Gershasen.

History

Gershasen was first mentioned in a division contract in 1270 with the Name Gerssazen.[1]

The name was written in History in multiple ways, Including:[1]

  • Gerszohsen
  • Gerschasen.

It was concluded on the name Gershasen in 1826.[1]

When Home ovens were banned, the Need of workers who built ovens rose. One Center was in Gershasen who helped workers all across the Westerwald. in the 1880's, 35 Oven builders existed while gershasen had a population of about 250 People.

When ovens became more popular in the first half of the 20s Century, the numbers of Oven builders started to go extinct.

The last independent oven builder died in 1980.

Gershasen was incorporated to Westerburg on the 7 of June 1969.[2]

Culture and sightseeing

Gershasen is known for their Backeshaus "Bakinghouse" and a Tilia (linden) near the graveyard of Gershasen which had existed for over 600 Years until it fell in 2021 because of Storm Depression Hendrik.[3]

The village has a fire brigade for volunteers.[4]

A common tradition,Saint Martin's Day is also celebrated here. People start at the playground in Gershasen, then are walking around multiple parts of the village singing songs (one is on a horse playing as Saint Martin) until they return back to the playground, where a big fire is getting light up by the Voluntary Fire Brigade of Gershasen and Pretzels are getting sold in the house of the Voluntary Fire Brigade (or they are free for People under 18)[5]
