History

The socio-political network publication Fontanka.ru was founded in 2000 (in a number of media, 1999 was erroneously indicated as the date of creation of Fontanka.ru) by journalists Andrei Konstantinov, Alexander Gorshkov, Andrei Potapenko and Evgeny Vyshenkov. The founder was the agency of journalistic investigations "Azhur-media".

The newspaper got its name from the Fontanka River, next to which the editorial office is located. Daily news has been published since August 2000.[4][1][5][6]

In April 2013, a controlling stake in the company was acquired by the Swedish holdingг Bonnier Business Press, at that time also owned the newspaper "Delovoy Peterburg".[7] The deal was valued at $7.5 million.[1] But two years later, after the signing of the law on limiting the share of foreign shareholders in the Russian media, the company was forced to resell its stake to minority shareholders: Andrey Konstantinov, Evgeny Vyshenkov, Andrey Potapenko and Alexander Gorshkov.

In the future, the Fort Group holding showed interest in the publication, which bought out 80% of the shares of Delovoy Peterburg at the end of 2015 from the same Bonnier Business Press. Officially, the participation of the holding among the shareholders of Fontanka.ru was not reported. The media reported on the connection of the co-owners of the holding Maxim Levchenko and Boris Paykin with the management of the publication, and the co-founder of the publication Alexander Gorshkov described the structure of the company as follows: “There are four of us and a friendly JSC”.[8][9][10][11][12]

In January 2019, a controlling stake in Azhur-Media, which publishes the online newspaper Fontanka.ru, was bought out by media manager Victor Shkulev.[13]

The entrepreneur emphasized that his American partner Hearst Corporation was not involved in the deal.[14] Its amount was not disclosed, but it is known that it has become one of the largest in the St. Petersburg media market in recent years. According to shareholder Andrei Konstantinov, the changes will not affect the editorial policy of the publication:

This event opens up new prospects and opportunities for Fontanka. The long-standing dream of those who created the online newspaper was to find a reliable and professional partner with whom we could develop our project together. I am very pleased that Viktor Shkulev, whom we have known since 1994, since working at Komsomolskaya Pravda, showed interest in Fontanka

Victor Shkulev intended to increase the amount of entertainment content and content for a female audience, as well as to strengthen the newspaper's regional focus, although he emphasized that the deal was not related to the gubernatorial election. Dmitry Vitkovsky, who previously worked as the head of the advertising department at Antenna-Telesem, became the new CEO.[15][6]
