European Conference on Information Literacy

The European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) is currently a biannual conference held in different countries around Europe. Prior to 2020 this was an annual event. The main themes are information literacy (IL), media literacy (ML), and lifelong learning (LL). The first conference was held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013. ECIL is sponsored by the Department of Information and Communication Sciences of the University of Zagreb and the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University.[1] The conference also has patronage and support UNESCO and IFLA.[2] In 2016, ECIL added a new co-organizer, the Information Literacy Association (InLitAs).[3]

Known for its high-quality presentations, keynote speeches, and workshops that offer valuable insights into the latest research and innovations in the IL, ML, and LL fields. Proceedings books are published by Springer. The conference also provides opportunities for participants to network with colleagues, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations.[4]

In 2016, Jesús Lau, wrote that ECIL is advancing IL research and practice worldwide. A smaller study conducted by conference participants, in 2014, has grown into the Academic Reading Format International Study (ARFIS), an ongoing collaboration involving researchers in more than 30 countries on four continents.[5] Evidence shows that ECIL has resulted in an increase in publications about IL. In 2016, Sirje Virkus analyzed citations of IL publications in Web of Science. Virkus indicated that about a 24% increase in IL publications in 2013 resulted from the first ECIL.[6]

History

The European Conference on Information Literacy (or ECIL) was organized by Sonja Špiranec at the University of Zagreb and Serap Kurbanoğlu from the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University.[7] Špiranec and Kurbanoğlu met in 2008, when they each hosted a UNESCO sponsored Training-the-Trainers in Information Literacy (TTT)[8] workshop. Over the next few years Špiranec and Kurbanoğlu met several times. In September of 2011 while participating in European Union Erasmus Intensive Program (IP) they decided to create an international information literacy conference, to be held in Europe, with a strong research component.

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers, information professionals, employers, media specialists, educators, policy makers and all the other related parties from around the world, that exchange knowledge and experience and discuss recent developments and current challenges in and related to IL. ECIL's mission is to provide an annual forum for individuals interested in IL to share information about their research and practice.[9]
