Consumer Goods Forum

The Consumer Goods Forum is a global organization of 400 consumer goods companies with the likes of Amazon and Kellogg being involved.[1] It represents combined sales of 2.5 trillion Euros across 70 countries and 10 million employees.[1]

Overview

The CGF was formed in 2009.[2] It is headquartered in Paris, and has regional offices in Washington, D.C. and Tokyo.[1]

Alongside the USAID, it has vowed to reduce deforestation.[3][4] It also vowed to reduce Hydrofluorocarbons from refrigeration at the 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference.[4][5][2]

The Forum's Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP) is concerned with improving working and environmental conditions in global supply chains. The programme's own Reference Guide describes the GSCP as

a business-driven programme for the continuous improvement of working and environmental conditions in global supply chains. The GSCP was created by and for global buying companies (manufacturers and retailers) wanting to work collaboratively on improving the sustainability (social and environmental) of their often‐shared supply base. To this end, these companies seek to harmonise existing efforts to deliver a shared, global and sustainable approach.[6]

European Supermarket Magazine noted that leading up to 2021, eight new "Coalitions of Action" had been established by the Forum, aiming to address various "key pressure points" affecting the consumer goods industry:

  • Forest Positive
  • Plastic Waste
  • Food Waste
  • Collaboration for Healthier Lives
  • Product Data
  • Human Rights – Working to End Forced Labour
  • Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI), and
  • Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).[7]
