History
The group was formed in 1979 by Ricky Wolff (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Joe Alves (guitar), John Weddepohl (vocals/keyboards), Chris Ghelakis (bass), and Neil McKellar (drums).[1] They were signed to Minc records and released their self-titled debut album in 1980.[2] Their songs would garner attention in their hometown of South Africa, including frequent radio air time, such as on Capital Radio 604.[2]
They had two top 20 hits on Springbok Radio in South Africa: "Shouldn't Fall In Love" (which peaked at #8 on 14 November 1980) and "When You Gonna Love Me" (which reached #20 on 29 May 1981).[3][4]
After releasing one studio albums and three singles, the group split up in 1982.
The groups co-lead singer Ricky Wolff was best known for his career in England. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Wolff was the lead singer for White Plains, his voice can be heard singing lead on songs such as My Baby Loves Lovin' and Step Into a Dream. He died on 1 October 2023 aged 78.
City Limits’ song When You Gonna Love Me was featured on the list of 1001 South African Songs You Must Hear Before You Go Deaf in 2013.[5]
