Background
On June 17, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic besieged Gudauta. The Georgians only had 150 people while Russians were more than 2000. After three days of fighting, the garrison broke through the siege and retreated. 70 people were captured, 24 survived and arrived in Sukhumi. On June 20, the Bolsheviks captured New Athos. They captured 100 people, 11 of them were tortured.[2]
On June 8, Giorgi Mazniashvili was appointed as the commander of the Black Sea coast of Georgia. By the order of the Minister of Defense, Grigol Giorgadze, units of the regular army were sent to Abkhazia. Mazniashvili, along with his chief of staff, Lt. Col. Giorgi Tukhareli, left Poti by ship for Sukhumi on the same day. At his disposal were 500 infantrymen, 300 Abkhaz horsemen, one artillery battery, three boats equipped with machine guns and two cannon-equipped ship "St. Michael". By this time, the Russians were entrenched in New Athos and were delaying the attack on Sukhumi, which gave Mazniashvli time to prepare.[3]
Mazniashvili started the attack on June 22, took New Athos and the next day - Gudauta. The Red Army retreated to the river Bzif. The attack of the Georgian army was supported by artillery fire from the sea. The Russian army retreated, passed Belorechensk, Krasnodar Krai, Maykopp, Nevinomisk and joined the detachments of the Kuban People's Republic. Nestor Lakoba was captured, while Efrem Eshba and Georg Atharbegov left Abkhazia and continued their activities in different cities of Russia.
Battle
On June 29, Georgian armed forces crossed Mzymta and occupied Adler. Georgians killed 200 of the enemy, captured 100, took guns and ammunition.
